Cardinal Giorgio Spinola

Giorgio Cristoforo Spinola (born June 5, 1667 in Genoa , † January 17, 1739 in Rome ) was papal diplomat and cardinal secretary of state .

Life

Spinola came from a noble Genoese family that produced several cardinals between the 16th and 19th centuries. He studied in Siena and began his career in 1694 at the Apostolic Signature . In 1695 he stayed in Ferrara as a vice delegate , after which he became consultor of the Holy Office . After Spinola was called to Malta as an inquisitor in 1703, he was ordained a deacon on June 6, 1706, and a week later he was ordained a priest .

Pope Clement XI. appointed him on June 1, 1711 titular Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia . He was ordained bishop six days later by Cardinal Fabrizio Paolucci ; Co- consecrators were Ferdinando Nuzzi and Domenico de Zaoli . On July 6, 1711, the Pope appointed Spinola as Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, and on June 29, the appointment as Papal Assistant to the Throne was made. In May 1713 Spinola became nuncio at the imperial court in Vienna, which he remained until 1720. On November 29, 1719 Clemens XI took him. into the College of Cardinals , later he was assigned the titular church of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura . Cardinal Spinola attended the conclave of 1721 .

The new Pope Innocent XIII. appointed him on May 10, 1721 as his cardinal secretary of state. After the election of Benedict XIII. in 1724 he lost this office again. In the following years Cardinal Spinola worked, among other things, as the papal legate in Bologna from 1727 to 1731. In December 1734 Pope Clement XII showed him . the titular church of Santa Maria in Trastevere . From 1736 to 1737 he represented Cardinal Annibale Albani as Camerlengo . On November 27, 1737 he became cardinal protector of the Camaldolese order . After he opted for the titular church of Santa Prassede in the same year , Cardinal Spinola rose to Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina in September 1738 .

He died in January of the following year and was buried in the Roman church of San Salvatore delle Coppelle .
