Vincenzo Petra (born November 13, 1662 in Naples , † March 21, 1747 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from a Neapolitan patrician family and was the son of Carlo Petra, adviser to the King of Naples and 1st Duke of Vastogirardi, and his wife Cecilia Pepe. Vincenzo Petra's brothers were Nicola Petra, 2nd Duke of Vastogirardi, and Giuseppe Maria Petra, Marchese of Caccavone. He was a nephew of Diego Petra , Archbishop of Sorrento , and of Dionisio Petra , Bishop of Capri . Vincenzo attended the Seminario Romano and the University of Naples , from which he received his doctorate on December 18, 1682 as Doctor iuris utriusque . In 1691 he was secretary to the prelate Giovanni Muti Pappazurri , a famous Rota auditor . On September 24, 1693 he was a trainee lawyer at the courts of the Apostolic Signature and in November 1694 a judge there. In June 1698 he found himself secretary of a congregation for the Apostolic Visitation and the situation of the regular clergy. In January 1700 he was Deputy Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber and in May 1706 Secretary of the Congregation for the Tridentine Council . On April 1, 1711 he was appointed consultor of the Apostolic Penitentiary and confirmed in this position on January 21, 1713.

The ordination received Vincenzo Petra on 2 October 1712. In the same year he became a consultor of the Congregation for the Roman Inquisition, and general and canons of the Lateran Basilica .

Pope Clement XI. appointed him on October 5, 1712 titular Archbishop of Damascus . He was ordained bishop on October 9th of the same year by Cardinal Fabrizio Paolucci ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Domenico de Zaulis , former Bishop of Veroli , and Antonio San Felice , Bishop of Nardò . On December 8, 1712 he was appointed Papal Assistant to the Throne . In December 1715 he was appointed as the successor to Ferdinando Nuzzi, who was promoted to cardinal, as secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regular Clerics, a position he held until he was promoted to cardinal. In 1722 he also became the datar of the Apostolic Penitentiary .

In the consistory of November 20, 1724 Pope Benedict XIII. him cardinal priest . The Pope awarded him the cardinal's hat and Sant'Onofrio as the titular church on December 20 of the same year. From January 10, 1727 until his death he was Prefect of the Congregation Propaganda Fide .

Vincenzo Petra was a participant in the 1730 conclave that Pope Clement XII. chose. On January 19, 1733 he became chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . On February 11, 1737 he opted for the titular church of San Pietro in Vincoli . He took part in the 1740 conclave , from which Benedict XIV emerged as Pope. On September 16, 1740 he opted for the cardinal class of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina .

He died in Rome on March 21, 1747 at 10:30 a.m. He was buried in the Roman church of Spirito Santo dei Napoletani .
