John Van Schaick Lansing Pruyn

John Van Schaick Lansing Pruyn (born June 22, 1811 in Albany , New York , † November 21, 1877 in Clifton Springs , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1863 and 1865 and between 1867 and 1869 .

Career

John Van Schaick Lansing Pruyn was born and raised in Albany about a year before the outbreak of the British-American War . He pursued classical studies and graduated from the Albany Academy in 1826 . Pruyn studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Albany in 1832. He held several local offices. In 1844 he was appointed regent at the University of the State of New York . In 1854 he ran unsuccessfully for the 34th Congress . He sat in the New York Senate in 1861 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

He was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in a by-election on December 7, 1863 in the 14th constituency of New York to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Erastus Corning . On March 3, 1865, he resigned from Congress . In the congressional election of 1866 for the 40th Congress , he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives, where he succeeded Charles Goodyear on March 4, 1867 . Since he on a run again in 1868 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1869 Congress of.

After his time in Congress, he went back to his practice as a lawyer in Albany. In 1868 he became chancellor ( chancellor ) at the University of State of New York - a position which he held until his death. He died on November 21, 1877 in Clifton Springs, Ontario County . His body was then interred in the Albany Rural Cemetery in Albany.

On October 22, 1840 he married Harriet Corning Turner (1822-1859), niece of Erastus Corning. The couple had six children together:

After the death of his first wife, he married Anna Fenn Parker (1840–1909), daughter of Amasa J. Parker . The couple had two daughters:

  • Harriet Langdon Pruyn (1868-1939)
  • Huybertie Lansing Pruyn (1873–1964)
