Aloe neilcrouchii is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet neilcrouchii honors the South African ethnobotanist Neil Robert Crouch (* 1967).

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe neilcrouchii grows in a stem-forming manner and sprouts mainly from the base. The prostrate to upright trunks reach a length of up to 95 centimeters and are 9 centimeters thick. The ascending-spreading, deltoid to ovate-lanceolate leaves form a dense rosette . The green leaf blade is up to 43 inches long and up to 13.5 inches wide. The leaf surface is covered on both sides with numerous, elongated, white, somewhat warty spots. The whitish teeth on the narrow, cartilaginous, whitish leaf margin are 1 to 2 millimeters long and 2 to 5 millimeters apart. The clear leaf juice dries clear and is not bitter.

Inflorescences and flowers

The simple, upright inflorescence reaches a length of 60 to 80 centimeters. The heady grapes are about 12 inches long and 10 inches wide. The lanceolate, pointed, pale whitish bracts have a length of about 30 millimeters and are 7 millimeters wide. The salmon-pink, green-tipped flowers are on 30 to 45 millimeter long peduncles . The flowers are about 45 millimeters long. At the level of the ovary , they have a diameter of 10 to 13 millimeters. Above this, the flowers are narrowed to about 7 millimeters towards the mouth. Your outer tepals are almost not fused together. The stamens not or hardly stick and pen stands about 5 millimeters from the flower out. The flowering period extends from December to February.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are elongated, light green to yellowish green capsules . They are 40 to 45 millimeters long and about 22 millimeters wide. The capsule fruits contain wrinkled, black seeds 3 millimeters long and 2 millimeters wide. They have semi-transparent, light brown wings that are about 1 millimeter wide.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe neilcrouchii is widespread in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal on south-east facing slopes in rocky grasslands. At the type locality near Karkloof in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands it grows together with Agapanthus campanulatus , Alepidea cordifolia , Blechnum inflexum , Senecio oxyriifolius and Merwilla plumbea .
