Lewis Beach

Lewis Beach (born March 30, 1835 in New York City , † August 10, 1886 in Cornwall , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1881 and 1886 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lewis Beach graduated from Yale Law School in 1856 . He was admitted to the bar that same year and then began practicing in New York. In 1861 he lived in Orange County . He was a member and treasurer of the Democratic State Central Committee between 1877 and 1879 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1880 congressional elections for the 47th Congress , Beach was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 14th constituency of New York , where he succeeded John W. Ferdon on March 4, 1881 . He was re-elected twice in a row, but died during his last term on August 10, 1886 in his house "Knoll View" in Cornwall. As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings ( 49th Congress ). His body was buried in the Green-Wood Cemetery in the then still independent city of Brooklyn .
