James Hawkes
James Hawkes (born December 13, 1776 in Petersham , Massachusetts , † October 2, 1865 in Rochester , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1821 and 1823 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
James Hawkes was born and raised in Petersham, Worcester County during the Revolutionary War . The family moved to Richfield , Otsego County , in 1789 . He attended community schools and taught at a school in Richfield and later in Burlington . He then moved back to Richfield and was sheriff in Otsego County between 1815 and 1819 . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1820 .
As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the congressional elections of 1820 for the 17th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Robert Monell and Samuel Campbell on March 4, 1821 , which previously together represented the district in the US House of Representatives. He retired from the after March 3, 1823 Congress of.
He died on October 2, 1865 in Rochester and was then buried in Mount Hope Cemetery . The civil war ended about three months earlier .
