Sidney Lawrence

Sidney Lawrence (born December 31, 1801 in Weybridge , Vermont , † May 9, 1892 in Moira , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Sidney Lawrence was born in Weybridge, Addison County , in the early 19th century . The family moved to Moira, Franklin County , during early childhood . There he attended community schools. He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Moira. He served as justice of the peace for more than half the century. He was also a supervisor and assessor . In 1837 he became guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Franklin County - a position he held until 1843. He served in the New York Senate in 1843 and 1844, and in the New York State Assembly in 1846 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1846 for the 30th Congress he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Joseph Russell on March 4, 1847 . After his time at the congress, he returned to legal activities, but also pursued real estate and banking transactions. He died on May 9, 1892 in Moira and was then buried in the cemetery of the same name.
