William T. Granahan

William Thomas Granahan (born July 26, 1895 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  May 25, 1956 in Darby , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1945 and 1947 and again from 1949 to 1956 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Granahan attended his home public schools and La Salle Extension University in Chicago . During the First World War he served in the US Army . Until 1919 he belonged to the American occupation forces in Germany . Between 1925 and 1929 he worked in the construction industry. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1938 to 1942 he was a member of the state board of the Democrats in Pennsylvania. From 1941 to 1944 he worked for the treasury of his state.

In the 1944 congressional elections , Granahan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican Joseph Marmaduke Pratt on January 3, 1945 . Since he was not confirmed in 1946, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1947 . During this time the Second World War ended .

After leaving the US House of Representatives for the time being, Granahan returned to the construction industry. In the elections of 1948 he was re-elected to Congress in the second district of his state, where he replaced Robert N. McGarvey on January 3, 1948 , who had been his successor two years earlier. After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on May 25, 1956. During this time, among other things, the Korean War and, domestically, the beginning of the civil rights movement fell . At the time of his death, William Granahan had already been nominated for re-election. His widow Kathryn won the by-election .
