Toby Morris (born February 28, 1899 in Granbury , Texas , † September 1, 1973 in Lawton , Oklahoma ) was an American politician . Between 1947 and 1953 and from 1957 to 1961 he represented the sixth constituency of the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Toby Morris came to the Oklahoma Territory as early as 1906 . In 1913 he settled in Walters , Cotton County . There he attended public schools. During the First World War he was a soldier in the US Army . After the war, Morris studied law; in 1920 he was admitted to the bar. Between 1921 and 1925 he was employed by the Cotton County court, and from 1925 to 1929 he was a district attorney. He then worked as a private lawyer. Between 1937 and 1946, Morris served as a district judge in the 21st Judicial District of Oklahoma.

In 1946 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the Sixth District of Oklahoma . There he replaced Jed Johnson on January 3, 1947 , whom he had beaten in the primary. After a re-election in 1952, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1953 . In the elections of 1952 he lost in his party's primary to Victor Wickersham .

From January 1955 to December 1956, Morris served as a District Judge in the Fifth Judicial District of Oklahoma. In the congressional elections of 1956 he was able to regain his old seat of MPs and then spend two more terms in Congress between January 3, 1957 and January 3, 1961. In 1960 he lost again in the primary to Wickersham, who then took the seat in Congress again. Between 1961 and 1963, Morris was a judge on the Oklahoma State Industrial Court . He was then a district judge in Oklahoma until 1971. He then retired. Toby Morris died two years later in Lawton and was buried there.
