Thomas Jefferson "Tom" Steed (born March 2, 1904 in Eastland County , Texas , † June 8, 1983 in Shawnee , Oklahoma ) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1981 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Tom Steed was born on a farm near Rising Star , Texas. He attended Konawa, Oklahoma public schools and then worked in the newspaper business for 20 years. During this time he was, among other things, editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Shawnee News and Star" for four years. During the Second World War he served as a soldier in the US Army . From July 1944 to December 1945 he was in East Asia in the area of India and Burma in a news unit.

Steed was a member of the Democratic Party . As their candidate, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in 1948 , where he succeeded Glen D. Johnson on January 3, 1949 . After he was confirmed in the following 15 elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress in a total of 16 legislative periods up to January 3, 1981. During the 94th Congress (1975-1976) he was chairman of the Committee on Small Business .

In 1980, Steed waived another candidacy and withdrew into retirement, which he spent in Shawnee, where he died in 1983.
