James Vernon Smith (1967)

James Vernon Smith (born July 23, 1926 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma , † June 23, 1973 in Chickasha , Oklahoma) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1969 he represented the sixth constituency of the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Smith attended the public schools in his home country and then the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in Chickasha. He then worked in agriculture, especially in the field of cattle breeding. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . In 1966 Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Jed Johnson junior of the Democratic Party on January 3, 1967 . Since he was not confirmed in the following elections in 1968, Smith could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1969 .

After his tenure in the House of Representatives, Smith was named by President Richard Nixon to head the Farmers Home Administration , a federal agency that deals with farmers' problems. He held this office from 1969 to 1973. Soon after leaving office, James Smith died in a fire in a grain field on his farm northwest of Chickasha.
