Percy Lee Gassaway (born August 30, 1885 in Waco , Texas , † May 15, 1937 in Coalgate , Oklahoma ) was an American politician . Between 1935 and 1937 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1899, Percy Gassaway moved with his parents to Fort Sill in the Indian territory of what was then Oklahoma Territory . There and in Oklahoma City he attended public schools; after that he was an administrative clerk at a law firm. After studying law on his own and being admitted to the bar in 1918, he began working in his new profession in Coalgate. There he also worked in agriculture.

Gassaway was a district judge in Coal County from 1923 to 1926 and was a judge in the 26th District Judge from 1926 to 1934. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In the elections of 1934 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth district of Oklahoma , where he replaced Thomas D. McKeown on January 3, 1935 . Since he was not nominated for re-election by his party in 1936, Percy Gassaway could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1937 . After the end of his political career, Gassaway worked again as a lawyer and rancher. However, he only had a few months, since he died in May 1937.
