Coalgate is a city with the status of City and at the same administrative center ( the county seat ) of the Coal County in the US -amerikanischen State Oklahoma .
geography
Coalgate is located approximately 160 kilometers southeast of Oklahoma City and 65 kilometers north of Durant . The connecting road US Highway 75 runs right through the city. In the west there is an open prairie landscape .
history
The town was founded in 1889 on the territory of the Choctaw and was first named "Liddle" in honor of William Liddle, who discovered a high-yield coal mine in the region. Three railway lines touched the city and transported coal to other parts of the country. The motto was: "A GATE to wealth from the COAL Industry" (A door to wealth from the coal industry). From two words of this motto, the city was renamed Coalgate in 1890 . At the beginning of the 20th century, up to 3,500 people lived in the city. Today the coal industry is no longer an issue and Coalgate has small and medium-sized factories and farms.
Demographics
In 2012 a population of 1976 was determined, which means a decrease of 1.4% compared to the year 2000. The average age of residents in 2012 was 38.7 years, below the Oklahoma average, which was 40.6 years. About 16.6% of the population are of Indian descent.
Of the immigrant groups during the city's early days, 8.8% were from England , 7.9% from Ireland and 4.9% from Germany.
