Dixie Gilmer

William Franklin "Dixie" Gilmer (born June 7, 1901 in Mount Airy , Surry County , North Carolina , † June 9, 1954 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1951 he represented the first constituency of the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Career

While still a child, Gilmer moved with his parents to Oklahoma, where he attended public schools in Oklahoma City. Between 1911 and 1919 he served in the administration of the Oklahoma House of Representatives . After studying law at the University of Oklahoma Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1923, he began working in his new profession.

Politically, Gilmer became a member of the Democratic Party , as whose candidate he was elected to the State House of Representatives. In 1929 he moved to Tulsa . From 1931 to 1933 he was deputy and from 1936 to 1946 actual District Attorney in Tulsa County . In 1946, Gilmer ran unsuccessfully for governor of Oklahoma.

In 1948 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the First District of Oklahoma. There he took over from George B. Schwabe on January 3, 1949 . But since he lost to Schwabe in the next election in 1950, Dixie Gilmer could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1951 . After his tenure in Congress was over, Gilmer became the Oklahoma State Government Security Commissioner. He held this office until his death in June 1954.
