Marvin Henry "Mickey" Edwards (born July 12, 1937 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American politician . Between 1977 and 1993 he represented the fifth constituency of the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Mickey Edwards attended the public schools of his home country and studied at the University of Oklahoma until 1958 . He then worked in the newspaper business as both a reporter and a publisher. After studying law at Oklahoma City University Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1970, he began working in his new profession in Oklahoma City .

Politically, Edwards became a member of the Republican Party . In 1973 and 1974, he was a legal advisor to the Republican Steering Committee in Washington . In 1976 he was elected to the US House of Representatives. There he replaced John Jarman on January 3, 1977 , to whom he was still defeated in the 1974 elections. After he was confirmed in the following seven congressional elections in each case in his mandate, Edwards was able to complete a total of eight terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . He was temporarily a member of the Committee on Budgets and held a leading position within the Republican faction. In 1992 he was no longer nominated by his party, which also had to do with his involvement in a banking scandal.

After serving in Congress, Mickey Edwards gave lectures on politics at Harvard University . He then also worked at Princeton University . He has also been a political commentator on radio, television and newspapers. He also published some books and articles on political issues. In the course of time he became more cautious about his party. He criticized the Republicans for their unconditional support for the administration of President George W. Bush and said in a radio interview in November 2008 that he had voted for Democrat Barack Obama in the presidential election . In 2013 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Mickey Edwards is married to Elizabeth A. Sherman, a professor of politics at American University . The couple have three children and four grandchildren.
