Thomas Jeffery "Tom" Cole (born April 28, 1949 in Shreveport , Louisiana ) is a Republican politician from the American state of Oklahoma . He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2003 , where he represents the fourth congressional district of the state of Oklahoma.

Cole was born in Shreveport , Louisiana , to Helen Te Ata (née Gale) and John D. Cole. He lives in the fifth generation in Oklahoma and grew up in Moore, Oklahoma . His great-aunt Te Ata is a well-known Native American storyteller and actress. Cole is married to Ellen Cole and has one son, Mason Cole.

Tom Cole graduated from high school in Moore, Oklahoma and subsequently graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa , where he earned a bachelor's degree, Yale University , where he received his master's degree , and finally the University of Oklahoma at which he obtained a Ph.D. received his doctorate. He subsequently served on both faculties at that university and those at Oklahoma Baptist University .

Between 1982 and 1984, Cole served on the staff of Congressman Mickey Edwards . As a result, he struck a political career himself; so he was from 1985 to 1989 of the Republican Party of Oklahoma. Between 1988 and 1991 he sat in the Senate of that state; from 1995 to 1999 he then held the office of Secretary of State in the government of Oklahoma.

In the 2002 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives, with 54% of the vote against Democrat Darryl Roberts. As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. Its latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019.

Cole served as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee from 2007 to 2009 . As a member of the Chickasaw tribe, along with Markwayne Mullin, he is one of currently (2014) two descendants of continental American indigenous people in Congress and vice chairman of the committee for indigenous people.

On October 29, 2019, Cole voted as one of 11 members of the House of Representatives against the resolution classifying the murder and deportation of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as genocide.
