James Frederick "Jim" Bridenstine (* 15. June 1975 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) is an American former politician of the Republican Party and, since April 2018 Administrator of NASA . Between January 2013 and April 2018 he represented the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Jim Bridenstine attended Jenks High School in Tulsa and then studied business administration and psychology at Rice University in Houston until 1998 . Between 1998 and 2007 he served in the United States Navy , whose reserve he is still a member. Bridenstine was a pilot and flew missions with Grumman E-2s in the Afghan war and the Iraq war . After completing his navy career, he continued his education until 2009 with an MBA at Cornell University in Ithaca . In the meantime he was Executive Director of the Tulsa Air & Space Museum & Planetarium . Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .

In the 2012 congressional elections , Bridenstine was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Oklahoma with 63:32 percent of the vote against Democrat John Olson , where he succeeded John A. Sullivan on January 3, 2013 which he had beaten in the primary of his party. After two re-elections so far in 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019, with the option to run again in 2018. In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election , Bridenstine supported Ted Cruz's candidacy .

In September 2017, the Trump administration nominated Bridenstine as the new NASA administrator. The nomination of Bridenstine as head of NASA, one of the most important scientific research institutions in the United States, aroused criticism, as Bridenstine had denied human-made global warming in the past. It was also criticized that Bridenstine had no scientific academic training. On April 19, 2018, the U.S. Senate confirmed Bridenstine as a NASA administrator. On June 5, 2018, in an interview with the Washington Post, he announced that his stance on climate change and its causes had changed. After speaking to many experts and reading a lot, he came to the conclusion that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas “of which we have released a large amount into the atmosphere and thus contributed to global warming. And we've done this in a really significant way. "

Under Bridenstine, the Artemis program was designed, which provides for regular moon landings by US astronauts from the mid-2020s.

Private

Jim Bridenstine is married with three children. The family lives in Tulsa.
