Bird Segle McGuire (born October 13, 1865 in Belleville , Illinois , †  November 9, 1930 in Tulsa , Oklahoma ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1907 he represented the Oklahoma Territory in the US House of Representatives as the last delegate ; between 1907 and 1915 he was a regular Congressman for the state of Oklahoma.

Early years

In 1867, Bird McGuire came to Randolph County , Missouri with his parents . There he attended public schools. In 1881 he moved to Chautauqua County , Kansas, and then to Indian Territory , where he raised cattle. At the same time he attended the State Normal School in Emporia . At times he also worked as a teacher.

After studying law at the University of Kansas and his admission to the bar in 1889, McGuire began to work in his new profession. Between 1890 and 1894 he was a district attorney in Chautauqua County. In 1894 he moved to Pawnee County , Oklahoma Territory, where he worked as a lawyer in Pawnee . In 1897 he was appointed Assistant Attorney General for the Oklahoma Territory.

Political career

McGuire was a member of the Republican Party . In 1902 he was elected as the new delegate in the US House of Representatives, where he replaced Dennis Thomas Flynn on March 4, 1903 . After re-election in 1904, he was able to exercise this mandate until March 3, 1907. This made him the last congressional delegate of the Oklahoma Territory, which was then dissolved.

After Oklahoma joined the United States, McGuire was elected a member of Congress in the new state's first congressional elections. After several re-elections, he was able to exercise his new mandate between November 16, 1907 and March 3, 1915. In contrast to his previous status as a delegate, he now had full voting rights. At times he was chairman of the Ministry of Interior's expenditure control committee. In the 1915 election, McGuire no longer ran for another term. In the following years he worked as a lawyer in Tulsa and ran a ranch near Bartlesville .
