Paul Stewart (born February 27, 1892 in Clarksville , Arkansas , † November 13, 1950 in Antlers , Oklahoma ) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1947 he represented the third constituency of the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1894 Paul Stewart moved with his parents to the Indian territory, where the family settled in what is now McCurtain County from 1894 . Stewart did not attend school, but acquired the necessary knowledge through self-education. At the age of 13 he was already working as a trader in Spencerville , which was also in the Indian territory . In 1910 he moved to Haworth , Oklahoma, where he continued as a dealer until 1919. At the same time he studied law. After his admission as a lawyer in 1915, he began to practice this profession. Between 1914 and 1922 Paul Stewart was a post holder in Haworth.

Politically, Stewart became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1922 and 1926 he was an MP in the Oklahoma House of Representatives . After that he was a member of the State Senate between 1926 and 1942 . There he headed the Democratic Group from 1929 to 1930. In 1933 and 1934 he was president of this body. In this function he was briefly acting governor in 1933 . In 1929 he moved to Antlers, where he published a weekly newspaper between 1929 and 1950. He also became a rancher, farmer and hotelier.

In 1942 Paul Stewart was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he replaced Wilburn Cartwright on January 3, 1943 . After a re-election in 1944, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1947 . In 1946 he no longer stood for election. He returned to his private business until his death in 1950. Stewart died in Antlers and was buried there.
