Phillip Colgan "Phil" Ferguson (born August 15, 1903 in Wellington , Sumner County , Kansas , † August 8, 1978 in Tijuana , Mexico ) was an American politician . Between 1935 and 1941 he represented the eighth constituency of the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Phil Ferguson attended the public schools of his home country and then studied at the University of Kansas at Lawrence until 1926 . After moving to Oklahoma, he settled on a ranch near Woodward . There he dealt with agricultural matters. Among other things, he began to raise cattle.

Politically, Ferguson became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1934 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he replaced Ernest Marland on January 3, 1935 . After he was confirmed in this office in 1936 and 1938, he was able to complete a total of three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1941 . In 1940 he was defeated by Republican Ross Rizley .

After leaving Congress, Ferguson returned to farming. During World War II , he served as a major in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1944 . In 1944 he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress; In 1958 he ran after an interim move to the Republicans, also unsuccessfully, for the office of governor of Oklahoma. He subsequently worked as a rancher and was director of the Bank of Woodward .
