Ernest James Istook Jr. (born February 11, 1950 in Fort Worth , Texas ) is an American politician . Between 1993 and 2007 he represented the fifth constituency of the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ernest Istook attended Castleberry High School in Fort Worth until 1967 and then Baylor University in Waco until 1971 . After studying law at Oklahoma City University's law school and being admitted to the bar in 1976, he began practicing his new profession. During his student days, Ernest Istook also worked as a radio news anchor.

Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1977 and 1978 he was a member of an Oklahoma state committee to control the use of alcoholic beverages; he also served as legal advisor to Governor David L. Boren . From 1982 to 1986, Istook served on the Oklahoma County's Board of Directors of Public Libraries , and since 1985 he has been chairman of the board. At the same time he served on the local council and director of the Warr Acres , Oklahoma suburbs Chamber of Commerce . Between 1987 and 1993, Ernest Istook was an MP in the Oklahoma House of Representatives .

In 1992, Istook was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fifth district of Oklahoma , where he succeeded Mickey Edwards on January 3, 1993 . After six re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2007. He was temporarily a member of the Budget Committee and the Homeland Security Committee . In Congress, Ernest Istook was rather conservative. He was against abortion and same-sex marriages. For this he wanted to anchor school prayer in the constitution. He was against signing the Kyoto Protocol and fully supported the administration of President George W. Bush .

In 2006, Istook waived another candidacy for the House of Representatives. Instead, he unsuccessfully applied for the position of governor of Oklahoma. In the elections he was defeated by the Democratic incumbent Brad Henry with 33.5% of the vote . Later, Istook was indirectly involved in a bribery scandal involving campaign donations.

Ernest Istook has been married since 1973 and has five children.
