Ulysses Stevens Stone (born December 17, 1878 in Weldon , DeWitt County , Illinois , † December 8, 1962 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) was an American politician . Between 1929 and 1931 he represented the fifth constituency of the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1894, Ulysses Stone moved with his parents to Jones , Oklahoma, where he attended public schools. He then studied at the University of Oklahoma in Norman . Between 1894 and 1905 Stone worked in the banking industry in Jones. From 1905 he was in the oil business in Norman and Oklahoma City.

Stone was a member of the Republican Party . In 1918 he unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor of Oklahoma. His candidacy for the US Senate , which he sought in 1926, was just as unsuccessful . In 1928 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he replaced the Democrat Fletcher B. Swank on March 4, 1929 , whom he had beaten in the elections. But since he lost to Swank in the next election, Stone could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1931 . In 1934 he ran unsuccessfully to return to the House of Representatives.

After his tenure in Congress ended, Ulysses Stone resumed his private business in the oil industry. He also worked in the real estate business. He died in December 1962 in Oklahoma City and was buried there.
