James Robert Jones (1981)

James Robert Jones (born May 5, 1939 in Muskogee , Oklahoma ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and diplomat.

Jones received his bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1961 and his LL.B. from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington. From 1961 to 1968 he was a member of the United States Army Reserve . During this time he served as a captain in the Army counterintelligence from 1964 to 1965 . In 1964 Jones was admitted to the Oklahoma and District of Columbia bar and practiced in Tulsa .

In 1972 Jones was elected a Democrat in Congress , where he represented the state of Oklahoma in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1973 to January 3, 1987 . In 1984 Jones served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . In the 1986 elections, he decided not to run again for a seat in the House of Representatives and instead tried unsuccessfully for a senatorial post.

From 1989 to 1993, Jones was Chairman of the American Stock Exchange . US President Bill Clinton then appointed him to succeed John Negroponte as United States Ambassador to Mexico . Jones held this office from 1993 to 1997; he was replaced by Jeffrey Davidow .
