Gertrude Caton-Thompson

Gertrude Caton-Thompson ( February 1, 1888 - April 18, 1985 ) was a British archaeologist .

Life

In 1893 Gertrude Caton-Thompson lost her father, who left her with a considerable fortune. She was financially independent for the rest of her life. After completing her schooling, she traveled a lot, for example through France , Italy , Malta and Switzerland from 1906 to 1910 and to Egypt in 1907 and 1911 . In doing so, she discovered her passion for bygone cultures and prehistory .

In 1921 she began studying prehistoric archeology at University College London , where she met the Petrie couple . She made her first excavation experiences with the Petries in Abydos in 1921-22 , 1923-25 ​​she dug with Petrie and Guy Brunton in Qau el-Kebir , 1924-28 she directed research in northern Fajum . In Zimbabwe they examined the "1929 ruins of Zimbabwe " on behalf of the British Science Association , furthermore, they examined the oasis Kharga (1930-1934) and the South Arabian Hadhramaut (1937-1938).

She specialized in prehistoric times and refuted the theory of WF Hume of the Geological Survey of Egypt that there was no prehistoric time in Egypt.
