Michael Griffin
Michael Douglas "Mike" Griffin (born November 1, 1949 in Aberdeen , Maryland , USA ) is an American physicist . From April 13, 2005 to January 20, 2009 he was head of the US space agency NASA .
Griffin studied physics ( bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University ), aerospace engineering (master's from Catholic University of America and a doctorate from the University of Maryland in 1977 ), electrical engineering (master's from the University of Southern California ), business administration (master's from Loyola College ) and civil engineering (Masters from George Washington University ).
Griffin was Deputy Director of Technology for the SDI program in the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization in the United States Department of Defense for five years from 1986 and worked at NASA as chief engineer and research director (Associate Administrator for Exploration) from August 1991 to 1994. Before working as vice president for 1995 Orbital Sciences Corporation came, a space company in Dulles ( Virginia ), he was the general manager of Space Industries International in Texas before.
Griffin then headed In-Q-Tel in Arlington, Virginia, a technology research company founded in 1999 by the CIA . From April 2004 he was director of the space division of the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University in Laurel, Maryland for a year.
On March 11, 2005, Griffin was proposed by US President George W. Bush as head of NASA. On April 13, he was confirmed by the Senate and one day later took over from Sean O'Keefe as NASA's 11th administrator . Griffin was formally sworn in on June 28, 2005 by US Vice President Dick Cheney .
On February 15, 2018, Griffin was confirmed by the Senate as Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering .
