Aberdeen is a city in Harford County in the state of Maryland in the United States .

geography

The city is 40 kilometers northeast of Baltimore and 80 kilometers southwest of Philadelphia . The Interstate 95 highway, also known as the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway, passes nearby. The nearby Susquehanna River flows into the northern end of Chesapeake Bay . Aberdeen is called "All America City".

history

Aberdeen was founded in 1852 by Edmund Law Rogers, whose family came from Aberdeen , Scotland in what is now the European Union . The majority of the settlers came from Scotland.

On October 20, 1917, the Aberdeen Proving Ground ( acronym : APG ) was opened. It is the oldest research and development facility in the United States Army . Almost 3900 military and 3000 civilian employees are employed on the site. There is also the United States Army Ordnance Museum , which is the largest open-air museum in the USA for large military equipment.

Due to the proximity to the water, fishing industry developed in Aberdeen, which has made a name for itself in particular because of the blue crabs that occur in the Chesapeake Bay .

Demographics

At the 2010 United States Census , the population of Aberdeen was 14,959. There were 5,801 households, 3,699 people in Aberdeen were under 18 years old. As racial reported 8,815 people "white" 4564 "Black" or "African American" and 437 "Asian".
