history

Greek ice hockey clubs have existed in North America since the 1920s, and the Greek name for the sport of hockey epi Pagou also comes from this time. The first player of Greek descent in the NHL was goalkeeper Mike Karakas in 1935 .

Nevertheless, it took a long time for ice hockey to become a home in Greece itself, the Greek ice hockey league was only founded in 1989. The most important venue was the Stadium of Peace and Friendship , the need for other sports led to the closure of the ice rink, which was the only one in the 30 m × 60 m format, followed by the Ano Liosia Olympic Hall . Since then, numerous smaller ice rinks have been played.

The first three championships were won by Aris Saloniki , which with a total of four titles is the most successful team in the country after record champions Iptameni Pagodromoi Athens (seven titles). In the 2009 season seven teams played in the league.

mode

A season in the Greek Ice Hockey League usually lasts from May to June due to the low number of games. In the regular season, the teams play against each other once, so that in 2009 each team played six games. The first four teams then qualify for the play-offs, in which all teams meet once again. The champions are the team that finished the play-offs in first place.
