Stadium of Peace and Friendship
The Stadium of Peace and Friendship ( Greek Στάδιο Ειρήνης και Φιλίας , Stadio Eirinis kai Philias, mostly just SEF (Σ.Ε.Φ.)) is a multifunctional hall in the suburb of Neo Faliro of the Greek port city of Piraeus . It is primarily used for basketball and volleyball and holds a maximum of 14,095 spectators. It is a part of the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Sports Complex .
history
After the social democratic Pasok won the Greek parliamentary elections for the first time , they began planning the sports arena. The naming was based on that of socialist states, and the expressive design as a landmark in an exposed location was unusual for Greek standards. The design comes from the architect Thymio Papayannis. The curved roof construction is reminiscent of a riding saddle like the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Canada . In 1981 construction began opposite the Karaiskakis Stadium . In 1984 the completion could be celebrated. As the first and only event hall in Greece, it was planned as an ice rink that could be converted into a basketball hall. For this purpose, the boards were always removed and the playing field was laid out with oak parquet. In addition to the games of the Greek ice hockey league, ice revues also took place.
In 1991 the SEF received the gold award from the IAKS (International Working Group for the Construction of Sports and Leisure Facilities)
Since 1992 the basketball department of Olympiacos has used the sports arena as its home ground. It was no longer used for ice hockey games. From 2001 to 2002 the hall was refurbished and prepared for the 2004 Olympic Games , and earthquake security was also improved. Since then, the SEF has accommodated between 11,750 (for athletics competitions) and 14,095 (for basketball games) spectators, depending on usage.
