The International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) is a non-profit association in the field of sports buildings and leisure facilities.
In 1965 the International Sports Facility Construction Working Group was founded in Cologne . This is how today's association emerged . It is the only non-profit organization that deals with sports facility construction issues worldwide and for this reason has been recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a "Recognized Organization".
The presidents were (as of 2016): Willi Weyer (1965–1985), Günter Heidecke (1985–1990), Erich Schumann (1990–1997), Stephan Holthoff-Pförtner (1997–2015) and Stefan Kannewischer (since 2015).
There are seven sections: Germany, Japan, Latin America / Caribbean, Poland, Russia, Switzerland and Spain (as of 2016).
The association has around 1,000 members in 110 countries spread across all continents.

In addition to the IOC, the IAKS works with the International Paralympic Committee , the Sport Accord , the World Council for Sport Science and Physical Education and the International Union of Architects (UIA), sport and leisure program. It also maintains contacts with international sports associations and national Olympic committees and has been included by the United Nations in the list of advisory NGOs of the Economic and Social Commission ( UN-ECOSOC ).
The task and activities are to create a platform for planning and building, equipping and modernizing, financing and managing sports and leisure facilities, as well as participating in the development of standards and guidelines in Germany and Europe. In addition, the IAKS publishes the magazine "sb", organizes conferences and exhibitions and awards an international architecture prize for exemplary sports and leisure buildings, the IOC / IAKS Award and the IPC / IAKS award.
Members and partners are architects and engineers , companies and business associations, sports organizations, sports, education and construction ministries, local governments and educational institutions.
The purpose of the IAKS is, in particular, to promote sport on the broadest level by collecting, evaluating, passing on and, if necessary, the experience, fundamentals and research results gained in planning, building, equipping and operating sports and leisure facilities of all kinds .coordinated. Here are socially relevant aspects in the broadest sense, such as B. architecture, technology, sports science, economy and ecology to be considered. It also supports development in these areas through research and advice.
Congresses
The IAKS congress for the planning, construction, modernization and management of sports and leisure facilities is an international meeting point for experts in sports facilities and leisure facilities. The congress has been held every two years since 1969.
For many years he has received support from the International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee, Sportaccord and the German Ministry of the Interior.
The participants from many nations include architects, engineers, builders, planners, municipal decision-makers, technical and operational management, sports associations and clubs as well as the European trade press.
At the same time, Koelnmesse and IAKS are organizing the FSB - International Trade Fair for Open Areas, Sports and Pool Facilities - the world's largest trade fair for the products and services of the industry.
Seminars and events
The IAKS organizes specialist conferences and practical seminars on all aspects of sports and leisure facilities, for example on the topics of outdoor sports facilities, synthetic turf, artificial ice rinks and highlights financing, operational management, controlling and technical equipment.
IOC / IAKS Award and IPC / IAKS Award
The IOC / IAKS Award is the only international architecture award for sports and leisure facilities that have already proven themselves in operation.
Since 1987, this prize has been awarded every two years to exemplary well-designed and at the same time functionally successful sports facilities. The award-winning systems can be new buildings as well as the expansion or modernization of existing systems. The organizers of the competition are the IOC and the IAKS.
Together with the IPC, the IAKS also awards the IPC / IAKS award for disabled-friendly sports facilities . The award aims to promote the accessibility of sports facilities and all other buildings in order to give people with disabilities the opportunity to exercise or watch sports without restrictions and without barriers.
The International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee and the IAKS present the Architecture and Design Award for students and young professionals. This award honors innovative designs and concepts for sports, leisure and recreational facilities.
Publications
The IAKS has been publishing the international trade journal "sb" since 1967, which appears every two months with a different focus on sports architecture and presents the current industry trends in international sports facility construction. The latest technologies and product developments are also presented.
Furthermore, "sb" deals with the infrastructure for hosting major sports events such as the Olympic Games, World and European Championships. It is therefore a source of information for planners and practitioners from all areas of sports facility construction (municipalities, architects and engineers, universities, associations and industrial companies).
"Sb" is published in English and German. The journal is read primarily in German-speaking countries and Europe, but also in North, Central and South America, Africa, Asia and Australia.
