Maria Ferschl

Maria Ferschl (pseudonyms: Maria Schmit , Maria Salamon ; born March 18, 1895 in Melk , Lower Austria ; † April 10, 1982 in Saulgau , Baden-Württemberg ) was an Austrian teacher, writer and hymn poet .

Live and act

Ferschl, the daughter of an Imperial and Royal postal officer, attended the teacher training institute in Vienna after secondary school and was then the youngest secondary school teacher in the Austrian capital. Until 1944 she taught a. a. the subjects German, history and singing.

In the 1930s Maria Ferschl was involved in the liturgical movement in Klosterneuburg . Here she became an employee of the pastoral theologian Pius Johann Parsch . In addition to her teaching profession, she was significantly involved in the liturgical reform within the Catholic Church.

From 1945 to 1962, the unmarried Maria Ferschl lived with her sister Margaret, the parish housekeeper was in the rectory in Riedhausen . In 1962 the two moved to Saulgau in Upper Swabia , where Maria Ferschl died in 1982.

During her life Maria Ferschl developed a rich literary activity, partly under a pseudonym. Her work includes novels and game texts. She is also the author of a children's and home Bible.

Finally, psalm transcriptions as well as several song texts come from her, including the Advent song We say you to dear Advent ( Evangelisches Gesangbuch (EG) No. 17, Gotteslob (GL) No. 115) and the carol singers song We therefore come from the Orient , both set to music by Heinrich Rohr .

In gratitude, the Melk municipal council named a small street in the KG Melk after the famous poet "Maria-Ferschl-Weg" on September 14, 2004. A street in the intermunicipal industrial park Königsegg in the communities of Ostrach , Königseggwald and Riedhausen has also been named after her since the end of 2017.
