Rising Star is a city in Eastland County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located on US Highway 183 , about 90 km southeast of Abilene in the southwest of Eastland County and has a total area of 4.3 km² without any significant water surface.
history
The city began in 1876 when six families from Gregg County settled here. In 1878 the first post office came and the place was called Copperas Creek. In 1880 the place was renamed Rising Star. In 1889 there were already five shops and three doctors in the village. The city experienced a further boom in 1909 through the discovery of oil. However, the boom only lasted until 1920.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 , 835 people lived here in 345 households and 212 families. The population density was 191.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 93.65% White, 0.24% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 2.87% other ethnic groups. About 2.75% were mixed race and 6.23% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 345 households, 24.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.1% of these were married couples living together. 9.0% were single mothers and 38.3% were non-families. 35.1% of all households were single households and there were people living in 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.98.
23.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 6.8% 18 to 24, 22.6% 25 to 44, 22.4% 45 to 64, and 24.4% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 88.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 83.0 men.
The median income for a household in the 19,118 USD , and the median income for a family 30,000 USD. Males had a median income of $ 22,750 versus $ 15,625 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,636. 24.4% of the population and 19.4% of families are below the poverty line. 33.7% of these were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 25.0% were 65 or older.
