John Chenoweth

John Edgar Chenoweth (born August 17, 1897 in Trinidad , Colorado , † January 2, 1986 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1941 and 1949 and from 1951 to 1965 he represented the third constituency of the state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Chenoweth attended public schools in his home country and then attended the University of Colorado at Boulder . Between 1916 and 1925 he worked in the railway business and in trade. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1925, he began working in his new profession in his native Trinidad in 1926. Between 1929 and 1933 he was the assistant district attorney for the Colorado Third Judicial District; from 1933 to 1941 he served as a district judge in Las Animas County .

Chenoweth was a member of the Republican Party and was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in 1940 as its candidate in the third district of Colorado , where he succeeded Democrat William E. Burney on January 3, 1941 . After he was re-elected in the following three congressional elections, Chenoweth could remain in Congress until January 3, 1949 . In 1948 he was defeated by the Democrat John H. Marsalis , whom he was able to beat again in the next congressional elections in 1950, thus regaining his mandate in Congress. After he was re-elected six times, Chenoweth was able to serve seven consecutive terms in the House of Representatives between January 3, 1951 and January 3, 1965. He then lost the 1964 election to Frank E. Evans .

After his time as a congressman, John Chenoweth practiced again as a lawyer in Trinidad, where he died in January 1986.
