John H. Marsalis

John Henry Marsalis (born May 9, 1904 in McComb , Mississippi , † June 26, 1971 in Pueblo , Colorado ) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1951 he represented the third constituency of the state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Marsalis attended schools in McComb and moved to Colorado Springs with his parents in 1922 . In 1925 and 1926, however, he returned to study at the University of Mississippi . He later studied law at the University of Colorado . After his admission to the bar in 1935, he began practicing his new profession in Pueblo. From 1935 to 1936 he also worked as an investigator for the district attorney. During the Second World War Marsalis was a soldier in the US Army , in which he served in a weather forecast unit.

After the war, Marsalis served as a district attorney in Colorado's 10th Judicial District from 1945 to 1948. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1948 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC against Republican incumbent John Chenoweth in the third district of Colorado . But since he lost to Chenoweth in the following elections in 1950 and this regained his old seat, Marsalis was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress between January 3, 1949 and January 3, 1951 . In 1952 he failed with another candidacy.

After his time in Congress ended, he returned to work as a lawyer. Between 1954 and 1962 he was a judge in the Tenth Judicial District of Colorado. He then retired, which he spent in Pueblo. He died there in June 1971.
