Patricia Nell Scott "Pat" Schroeder (born July 30, 1940 in Portland , Oregon ) is an American politician . Between 1973 and 1997 she represented the first constituency of the state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Patricia Nell Scott, her maiden name, attended Roosevelt High School in Des Moines ( Iowa ) until 1958 , where she had moved with her parents. She then studied history at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis until 1961 . After studying law at Harvard University Law School , she was admitted to the bar in 1964. In 1964 she moved to Denver , the capital of the state of Colorado, where she worked as a lawyer. Between 1964 and 1966 she was a member of the National Labor Relations Board . She also worked as a teacher between 1969 and 1972.

Politically, Schroeder became a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1972 congressional elections she was elected to the US House of Representatives as their candidate in the first district of Colorado against Republican incumbent Mike McKevitt . After she was confirmed in her mandate in the following eleven congressional elections, Schroeder was able to complete a total of twelve legislative terms in Congress between January 3, 1973 and January 3, 1997 . She was the first woman to represent the state of Colorado in Congress. There she was temporarily a member of the Armed Forces Committee. Between 1991 and 1995 she was chairman of the children, youth and family committee. In 1987, she also applied for the presidential elections due in 1988, but withdrew her candidacy in September of that year. In 1996, she renounced another candidacy for Congress.

After serving in the House of Representatives, Patricia Schroeder became chair of the board of the Association of American Publishers in 1997 . She held this position until 2009, when she was replaced by Tom Allen , a former Maine congressman .
