Daniel Schaefer (born January 25, 1936 in Guttenberg , Iowa , † April 16, 2006 in Wheat Ridge , Colorado ) was an American politician .

Schaefer served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1957 . He studied at Niagara University in Niagara Falls , New York , where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1961 . Schaefer then attended Potsdam University in Potsdam (New York) from 1961 to 1964 .

From 1977 to 1978, Schaefer was a member of the Colorado House of Representatives . He then sat in the state Senate from 1979 to 1983 . In 1983, Schaefer moved to the US Congress after winning a by -election made necessary by the death of Jack Swigert . Schaefer represented there as a Republican from March 29, 1983 to January 3, 1999, the state of Colorado in the House of Representatives of the United States ; most recently in 1996 he was re-elected against the Democrat Joan Fitz-Gerald with 62.2 percent of the vote . In the elections to the 106th Congress in 1998, he decided not to run again.
