history

Originally the place was a camp for the Sauks and Fox . From 1673 French researchers called it Prairie La Porte . As part of the French colony Louisiana , the place went to the USA in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase , but remained in the possession of the Indians. It was not until 1837 with the second Black Hawk purchase that the Indians sold the surrounding area. When settlement began in 1845, most of the residents were immigrants from Germany. Even today there are buildings that were built by German engineers. The city was named after Johannes Gutenberg , the inventor of printing with movable letters.
