George M. Chilcott

George Miles Chilcott (born January 2, 1828 in Cassville , Huntingdon County , Pennsylvania , †  March 6, 1891 in St. Louis , Missouri ) was an American politician who represented the state of Colorado in the US Senate .

A native of Pennsylvania, George Chilcott moved with his parents to Jefferson County , Iowa, in 1844 . There he studied until 1850 medicine . In 1853 he became sheriff of Jefferson County; three years later he moved to the Nebraska Territory . There he was active as a member of the territorial House of Representatives for the first time politically. In 1859 he finally settled in the Colorado Territory , where he became a member of the Territorial Council in 1861 for a one-year term. There he also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1863, and he as a notary for the to 1867 United States Land Office worked.

In that year he moved to the US House of Representatives for the Republicans as a delegate of the Colorado Territory , where he remained until 1869; subsequently he rejoined the Territorial Council. After the founding of the state of Colorado in 1878 he was a member of its House of Representatives . On April 17, 1882, he became the acting successor to the resigned Henry Moore Teller in the US Senate . He left the Senate on January 27, 1883 and then retired from politics.
