Marilyn Musgrave

Marilyn Neoma Musgrave (born January 27, 1949 in Greeley , Colorado ) is an American politician . She is a member of the Republicans and represented the fourth congressional electoral district of the state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives from 2003 to 2008 . Before that, she was a member of the Colorado House of Representatives and Senate from 1992 .

Musgrave is considered very conservative, even by Republican standards. She became known through the bill she and Senator Wayne Allard introduced, the Federal Marriage Amendment , which opposes same-sex marriages. She is a strong anti-abortionist ("pro-life"), even in cases of rape and incest. She rejects a tightening of the gun laws and she initiated the congress working group ("caucus") for the 2nd amendment to the constitution , which regulates the right to gun ownership .

The anti-corruption organization CREW ( Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington ) classified Musgrave in 2005 as one of the "thirteen most corrupt members of Congress" and in 2006 as one of the "20 most corrupt members of Congress". In particular, she was accused of having abused the privileges she enjoys as a member of Congress for election campaign purposes. Musgrave denies these allegations. You can currently (2011) no longer find any current allegations on the CREW website.

In the House of Representatives, she was a member of the Committee on Agriculture , the Committee on Education and the Workforce, and the Committee on Small Business .

In the 2006 election she won 45.6% in her constituency against the Democrat Angie Paccione (43.1%) and Eric Eidsness, who stood up for the reformers . Eidsness has now become a member of the Democrats.

In the 2008 elections, however, she surprisingly lost significantly to her challenger from the Democrats , Betsy Markey . You could only win 44% of the vote for yourself, Markey had 56%. Musgrave was able to score again in the rural communities of the electoral district, but lost significantly in the more urban structured counties. Musgrave has not yet publicly commented on their defeat, nor did they congratulate Markey.
