geography

Greeley's geographic coordinates are 40 ° 25 '  N , 104 ° 43'  W (40.415119, −104.723988). The place is 1421 m above sea level.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 77.7 [[km 2 ]], of which 77.4 km 2 is land and 0.2 km 2 (= 0.30%) is water.

Greeley is bordered to the south by the towns of Evans and Garden City , sometimes collectively referred to inexactly as Greeley . Greeley and Evans are on the South Platte River , and the Cache la Poudre River runs through north of Greeley. It is often stated that the intersection of US Highways 85 and 34 is in Greeley, when it is actually in Evans. Greeley is the western terminus of Colorado State Highway 263 and Colorado State Highway 392 runs along the northern city limits. Colorado State Highway 257 also runs through Greeley.

history

In 1821 an expedition toured what is now Weld County; however, they were considered not to be habitable. Nevertheless, in 1869 at the instigation of the Union Colony of Colorado, which was founded for this purpose, a first settlement was built at the intersection of the railway line from Denver to Cheyenne and the Platte River . Horace Greeley , who later gave it its name, was also involved in the establishment of this settlement, although he only visited the place personally once, in the first year of its settlement. At that time they already had roads, irrigation canals and a newspaper, among other things. Greeley was promoted to town in 1886; at that time the place had 2,177 inhabitants.

Climate and vegetation

Greeley lies within a dry zone in the rain shadow of the Rocky Mountains . According to the Köppen climate classification, the place falls into the BSk zone, so it is a semi-arid steppe landscape. On a long-term average, around 330 mm of precipitation falls annually. Precipitation falls consistently as rain between May and September and as snow between November and March, with the earliest snowfall recorded on September 10th (1993) and the latest snowfall recorded on May 21st (2001). The snowiest month is usually March, but the strongest snowstorms occur in the autumn months. The residents of Greeley are confronted with extreme snowfalls of up to 60 cm every ten to fifteen years, such as in December 2006.

The highest temperatures reach 32 ° C in summer and 4 ° C in winter, with the warmest days usually occurring around the 3rd week of July and the lowest temperatures in January. The lowest values at night fluctuate between 16 ° C in summer and −9 ° C in winter. Extreme values of 40 ° C in summer and −32 ° C in winter were recorded. The first frost usually occurs around October 10th and the nights are frost-free until early May. Extra-tropical cyclones that affect weather in the eastern two-thirds of the United States often originate in or near Colorado, so Greeley does not often come under the influence of fully developed storm systems. Warm fronts, freezing rain or freezing rain thus do not occur here. In addition, the city's proximity to the Rocky Mountains and the low altitude compared to the surrounding areas mean that precipitation is low, and thunderstorms and tornadoes are less common than in the neighboring regions. This is exceptional because the area bordering Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming has between seven and nine days of hail per year and is in a zone with the highest tornado and hail activity in the United States.

Some days in winter and spring can be extremely warm and dry. The Chinook , a wind similar to a blow dryer , sometimes causes temperatures to rise to 21 ° C in January and February and up to 32 ° C in April. A temperature range of more than 20 ° C during the day is not uncommon, especially in spring and autumn. A rapid drop in temperature is also normal; a sunny October afternoon with temperatures of 27 ° C can be followed by a snowstorm within twelve months in which the air temperatures only reach −2 ° C.

Comparison between the vegetation in the area and the trees in Greeley made possible by the irrigation

Despite the dry climate, Greeley was named Tree City USA in 1980 by the National Arbor Day Foundation . Many of the streets in the city are lined with tall trees. This was achieved through Greeley's extensive irrigation system; only a few of the trees that grow here are actually native to the region. The most widespread tree and shrub species Greeley include red ash ( Fraxinus pennsylvanica ), American Gleditschia ( Gleditsia triacanthos ), elm , poplar , rhus , linden , pine , blue spruce ( Picea pungens ), apple trees , common lilac ( syringa vulgaris ), trumpet trees ( Catalpa bignonioides ), narrow-leaved olive willow ( Elaeagnus angustifolia ), black walnut ( Juglans nigra L. ) and juniper . There are also more exotic species, such as bubble ash ( Koelreuteria paniculata ) and star magnolia ( Magnolia stellata ). The occurrence of fruit trees is more decorative, including apples , pears (particularly Pyrus calleryana ), various types of plums and sour cherries . Peach and apricot trees thrive, but rarely bear fruit because of the fast start of summer with late frosts.

Greeley in the writer's eyes

James A. Michener served at Colorado State College of Education from 1936 to 1941 . During this stay in Greeley he developed the idea for his novel The Colorado Saga .

The Egyptian Islamist Sayyid Qutb studied at the Colorado State College of Education in 1949. In his work The America I Have Seen in 1951, he portrayed Greeley as a breeding ground for vice, full of “bare legs” and “animal-like” blending of the sexes.
