The Cache la Poudre River or simply Poudre River is located in the northern part of the state of Colorado in the USA .
course
The source region is located in the Front Range Mountains in Larimer County , in the northern part of the Rocky Mountain National Park , near the North American continental divide . The river runs eastward in the Rocky Mountains and flows through the Roosevelt National Forest and through Poudre Canyon . In the future, part of the water will be diverted into the Glade Reservoir , northwest of Fort Collins , during floods when the snow melts behind the Poudre Canyon, in order to use it for irrigation projects and to supply the surrounding cities. After the river leaves the canyon, it flows through the city of Fort Collins, traversing the relatively flat landscape to the east until it joins the South Platte River about 8 kilometers east of Greeley . The river has a length of about 203 kilometers and overcomes an altitude difference of 1867 meters.
Surname
The name of the river means “hiding place for the powder” in French. This refers to an incident in the 1820s when French trappers , surprised by a heavy snowstorm, had to hide ( cache ) part of their gunpowder ( poudre ) by the river in order to get it to safety.
activities
The United States Forest Service is responsible for administering the area . In 1986 the river was placed under protection and declared a National Wild and Scenic River . With this measure, this original and scenic river area should be protected from human interference. The Poudre Canyon Highway (Colorado State Highway 14), which runs parallel to the river in Poudre Canyon , has been designated as a National Scenic Byway . The railway line planned here has never been completed. The river is a popular destination for anglers, and if there is enough water, it offers opportunities for rafting and kayaking . In the valley of the Cache la Poudre River there are numerous camping and picnic areas, and designated trailheads allow hiking in the area.
