Timothy Endicott "Tim" Wirth (born September 22, 1939 in Santa Fe , New Mexico ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From January 3, 1975 to January 3, 1993 he sat for the US state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives and in the US Senate .

Early years, career and family

Wirth was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University . The Stanford University awarded him in 1973 the Ph.D.

Wirth is married to Wren Winslow Wirth. They both have a daughter and a son.

Political career

Wirth began his political career in the government of Richard Nixon , where he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Education. In 1970 he returned to Colorado, where he successfully ran for a seat in the US House of Representatives in 1974. Until 1987 he represented the 2nd district of the state of Colorado. During his time at the House , Wirth advocated alternative household taxes, including promoting the telecommunications industry.

In 1986, Wirth ran for a seat in the US Senate. In the election he was just able to prevail against his colleague Ken Kramer . He succeeded Gary Hart . In the Senate, he focused on climate change. In 1988 he organized the legendary Hansen Hearings in the USA . Wirth appeared more often as a sponsor of laws aimed at limiting environmental damage. In 1992 he did not stand for re-election.

After the congress

After he resigned from the Congress, he supported the candidacy of Bill Clinton for the post of US president Following its success in 1993 Clinton appointed him in the State Department to the Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs . During his tenure, among other things, he was a delegate of the US delegation at the climate conference in Kyoto , where the Kyoto Protocol was passed, but in which the USA did not participate. In 1997 he resigned to become President of the newly established United Nations Foundation , an independent foundation whose work aims to promote the goals of the UN . Wirth gave up the office of President on February 1, 2013. However, it will continue to be available to the foundation.

Awards

Wirth has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2004 . In 2008 he received the Champions of Earth Award .
