Robert William Bonynge (born September 8, 1863 in New York City , † September 22, 1939 there ) was an American politician . Between 1904 and 1909 he represented the first constituency of the state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Bonynge attended New York public schools and then studied law at Columbia College . After being admitted to the bar in 1885, he began working in this profession in his hometown until 1888. Then he moved to Denver , Colorado, where he also practiced as a lawyer.

Bonynge became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1893 and 1894 he was a member of the Colorado House of Representatives . In 1900 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Congress for the first time ; in the elections of 1902 he was then defeated by John F. Shafroth . But he appealed against the outcome of the elections. After Shafroth had made his mandate available on his own initiative before a decision to contest the election, Bonynge took over his seat in the US House of Representatives on February 16, 1904. Since he was confirmed in the elections of 1904 and 1906, he could represent the first district of Colorado until March 3, 1909 in Congress. In the elections of 1908 he lost to the Democrat Atterson W. Rucker .

After leaving Congress, Bonynge was a member of the National Monetary Commission until 1912 . After that he worked as a lawyer again. In November 1912, he moved his practice from Denver to New York City. From 1916 to 1918 he was an advisor to the New York State Industrial Commission . In 1923 he became a representative of the US government (agent) to the German American Mixed Claims Commission , a German-American commission that negotiated claims between the two states as a result of the First World War. In 1927 he was on a similar commission that dealt with claims against Austria and Hungary . After that, Bonynge was no longer politically active. He died in his hometown of New York in September 1939.
