William E. Burney

William Evans Burney (born September 11, 1893 in Hubbard , Hill County , Texas , † January 29, 1969 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American politician . Between 1940 and 1941 he represented the third constituency of the state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Burney attended public schools in Texas and then the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque . During the First World War he was a soldier in the US Navy . In 1924, William Burney moved to Pueblo , where he worked in the insurance business. Between 1937 and 1943 he was on the school board of this city. From 1924 to 1942 he was a member of the US Army Reserve , where he made it to major.

Politically, Burney was a member of the Democratic Party . After the death of Congressman John Andrew Martin , he was elected as his successor in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election. There, between November 5, 1940 and January 3, 1941, he ended the legislative term of his predecessor. In the regular congressional elections of 1940, he no longer ran. In the Second World War that followed, he was reactivated as an officer in the US Army. By the end of the war he had reached the rank of Colonel . After the war he returned to the insurance industry.
