Thomas Gerard "Tom" Tancredo (born December 20, 1945 in Denver ) is an American Republican politician. He represented the 6th constituency of the state of Colorado in the House of Representatives of the United States Congress from 1999 to 2009 . He was previously a member of the Colorado House of Representatives from 1977 to 1981 .

Life

Tancredo belongs to the right wing of the Republican Party and is known for his opposition to illegal immigration. He is also a staunch supporter of the death penalty and a staunch opponent of abortion. He was one of the few MPs to vote against a bill banning torture of prisoners in the war on terror.

He was a candidate for the 2008 US presidential election , but withdrew his candidacy on December 20, 2007 due to falling polls and problems with primary funding. In a debate among ten candidates for the Republican Party on May 3, 2007, he was one of three who admitted not to believe in the theory of evolution (the other two were Sam Brownback and Mike Huckabee ). He became known worldwide when he renewed a threat already expressed in 2005 to extinguish Mecca and Medina , the two holiest places of Islam , in the event of a nuclear attack by Muslim terrorists on the USA, in the 2007 presidential election campaign and took the view that a candidate, who removes the bombing of the holy cities of Islam as a legitimate means of deterring a terrorist attack from the table, is not suitable for the presidency.

Tancredo refused to renew the Voting Rights Act , which guaranteed racial equality in elections. This law, passed under the Lyndon B. Johnson administration , needs to be renewed at regular intervals. Tancredo is also known for unusually strong criticism of former President Obama. In a speech on July 8th, he said of him: "... the greatest threat to the United States, to our freedom, to our constitution, to our way of life; in everything we believe. The greatest threat to the country that our founding fathers created is the man who sits in the White House. " In April 2010, he asked why we "wouldn't send Obama back to Kenya?"

He called on Congress to start impeachment proceedings against Obama, saying his dog was smarter than Obama.

In 2011 he demanded that the US should provide financial support to the Iranian exile resistance organization Modschahedin-e Chalgh . Since 1997 this group has been classified by the USA as a terrorist organization.

Movie

Tancredo appears in a scene in the satirical documentary Religulous directed by Bill Maher .
