Religulous [ rɨˈlɪgjʊləs ] ( suitcase word formed from religion - religion - and ridiculous - ridiculous) is an American satirical documentary from 2008 . The script comes from the political satirist and agnostic Bill Maher , who is also the focus of the film. Directed by Larry Charles . The film is partly similar in style to the film Borat by the same director, but Religulous is not a mockumentary, unlike Borat . The content is about religious communities and beliefs . The focus is particularly, but not exclusively, on radical believers.

The film and the DVD with the title RELIGULOUS were released in German-speaking countries - one may ask .

content

The core part of the film are interviews. On the one hand, Maher interviews representatives and leaders of various organizations and movements, for example creationists , television preachers or the US Senator Mark Pryor . On the other hand, scientists, politicians and other people (for example an employee of the Vatican Observatory or an anti-Zionist Jew) who contradict these have their say. Maher also visits the Creation Museum and the Holy Land Experience .

evaluation

The film's world premiere took place on October 6, 2008 at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada. The regular theatrical release took place on October 3rd in Canada and the USA. After further festival presentations in Europe, the film started in regular cinemas in several European countries from November. The film was shown in Swiss cinemas from November 13th. The German cinema premiere took place on April 2, 2009, the Austrian on April 3.

Reviews

The film received mostly positive reviews from critics. The humor of the film and the attempted exposure of self-appointed religious leaders through critical interviews are often praised. However, the producers' manipulative intentions and the low level of argumentative disputes are criticized. Religulous was nominated for Best Picture at the 2008 Satellite Awards .

Spiegel Online described the film as "a sometimes extremely funny, entertaining documentary film".

Die Zeit wrote: "Religulous is the prototypical product of a cynic guerrilla, which for a long time does not come close to the gaudy anarchism of Borat, but in its caustic inquisition attitude is in parts hellishly entertaining". and "The film offers a colorful mix of unswerving believers, whose smiles barely hide a snarling aggressiveness, and greedy preachers, all garnished with funny TV clips."

The Süddeutsche Zeitung found that the film is "at a remarkably low level of argumentation ... and yet it has become a very funny documentary that is well worth seeing".

The world said that “Religulous is really funny, but the bottom line is that Larry Charles makes it too easy for himself ... nevertheless the 'Religulous' is also worth seeing for believers. It is well known that laughter comes from God. And the absurdity of many religious teachings has great humor potential ”.

ZDF.de wrote: "Doubt instead of security - that is what 'Religulous' stands for in a beneficial way: a somewhat disturbing and incredibly funny documentary about the greatest fiction of all time."

The Bayerische Rundfunk said: "A highly politically incorrect road movie, but quite entertaining. ... Laughter could well get stuck in your throat here and there, because the believers, usually unsuspecting, are brought before Maher and made ridiculous in the worst possible way, also by removing the original context from their statements. "

Christina Krisch wrote in the Kronen-Zeitung : “Instead of stirring up a wise desire for confrontation, Borat author and director Larry Charles chooses disrespectful provocation and rough polemics as a stylistic device, and he relies on heretical-manipulative editing techniques. A satirical crusade, but it hardly affects Scientology teaching! It is indeed a heavenly miracle that the believers got involved with this mocker at all! "

Maher was given negative credit for the uncommented inclusion of the anti-Islamic stance of the Dutch right-wing populist Geert Wilders .

In a review for The New York Times , Stephen Holden wrote that Maher would judge Christian fundamentalists differently from Jewish and Islamic ones. Critic Philip Weiss accused Maher of criticizing Islamic and Christian fundamentalists while he was giving Jewish fundamentalists a free ticket. Sam Greenspan says Maher would handle Jews with kid gloves.
