Occurrence

The distribution area includes northern Iran , Afghanistan , West Pakistan , Turkmenistan and Tajikistan . Here the narrow-leaved steppe candle occurs in the shrub and herb steppes and semi-desert on stone and loess slopes.

Systematics

Three subspecies of Eremurus stenophyllus are described:

  • Eremurus stenophyllus subsp. stenophyllus : leaves, bracts and stems are bare. The inflorescence has a length of 40 centimeters. The fruits have a diameter of 6 to 8 millimeters. This subspecies occurs in eastern Iran at altitudes of 1100 to 2450 meters.
  • Eremurus stenophyllus subsp. aurantiacus (Baker) Wendelbo : The stem is hairy at the base. The bracts are bare. The fruits have a diameter of 6 to 8 millimeters. This subspecies occurs in northern and central Afghanistan, Pamir-Alai and Pakistan in the western Himalayas at altitudes of 1200 to 3750 meters.
  • Eremurus stenophyllus subsp. ambigens (Vved.) Wendelbo : The base of the stem and the bracts are very hairy. The fruits have a diameter of 8 to 10 millimeters. This subspecies occurs in northern Afghanistan and Pamir-Alai at altitudes of (350) 600 to 1080 meters.
