John Salazar

John Tony Salazar (born July 21, 1953 in Alamosa , Colorado ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . As a member of the US House of Representatives , he represented the third congressional constituency of the state of Colorado from 2005 to 2011 . He was previously a member of the Colorado House of Representatives from 2003 to 2005 .

Salazar is married and has three sons. His younger brother Ken Salazar was also a member of Congress and represented Colorado as a senator; since January 20, 2009 he has been US Secretary of the Interior in the Obama cabinet .

Parliamentary work

Salazar was a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in the House of Representatives . He was a member of the Blue Dog Democrats , an intra-party coalition of moderately conservative politicians.

Re-elections

In the election year 2006 Salazar had to run for re-election for the first time, his opponent was the Republican Scott Tipton. Due to the relatively balanced electoral structure of the electoral district, a head-to-head race was expected, but Salazar won quite clearly with 61.6% of the vote. Two years later he achieved a similar result with a share of 61.4% and was re-confirmed in office; his Republican opponent Wayne Wolf got 38.6% of the vote. Scott Tipton won the Salazar seat in the 2010 election.
