Fred N. Cummings

Fred Nelson Cummings (born September 18, 1864 in Groveton , Coos County , New Hampshire , † November 10, 1952 in Fort Collins , Colorado ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1941 he represented the second constituency of the state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Fred Cummings was born on a farm near Groveton. Just one year after his birth, he moved with his parents to Clinton , Iowa . In 1879 the family moved to Nebraska , where they settled in Custer County . Cummings attended public schools there. He also began to work in agriculture, especially in livestock. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1891, he began practicing this profession in Custer County. In 1906 he moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where he also worked in agriculture. Between 1909 and 1913 he was a member of the local council.

Cummings was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1932 he was elected as their candidate in the second district of Colorado in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he replaced the Republican Charles B. Timberlake on March 4, 1933 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1941 . It was during this period that most of the federal government's New Deal laws fell under President Franklin D. Roosevelt , all of which were passed by Congress. In the 1940 election he was defeated by William S. Hill .

After his time in Congress ended, Fred Cummings returned to his private business. He died in November 1952 and was buried in Fort Collins.
