Ken Buck (2014)

Kenneth Robert "Ken" Buck (born February 16, 1959 in Ossining , New York ) is an American lawyer and politician . Buck was the Republican Party candidate in the 2010 Senate election for the post of Senator from Colorado . He has been a member of the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2015 .

Life

Ken Buck studied law at the University of Wyoming , graduating there in 1985. He came to Colorado in 1990 in order for the local office of the United States Attorney to work. In 2004 he was elected Weld County District Attorney . He is married and has two children.

Buck is a political career changer. He is a district attorney and narrowly won the Republican Senate primary against the party leadership candidate, former lieutenant governor Jane E. Norton (Buck: 51.5% / Norton: 48.4%). He narrowly lost the Senate election in a head-to-head race against the Democratic incumbent Michael Bennet (Bennet: 47.7% / Buck: 46.8%).

Four years later, Buck ran for the Congressional mandate of Senate candidate Cory Gardner in the fourth constituency of Colorado. He clearly defeated the Democrat Vic Meyers and was able to take his seat in Congress on January 3, 2015 . Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States, which meets on January 3, 2017 . Its new legislative period runs until January 3, 2019.

Political positions

Buck represents conservative to ultra-conservative positions and is close to the tea party movement . He wants to abolish the right to abortion in general and allows only one exception, if at all: if the mother's life is threatened by carrying the child to term. Even in the case of pregnancy due to rape or incest , he wants to ban abortions.

He describes the politics pursued by President Obama as a political shift to the left and wants to fight against it. In particular , he wants to reverse the Obamacare health care reform initiated by the president . He is strictly against any tax increases and generally supports the privatization of social security systems. He also wants to abolish student loans for federal students from middle-class families.

Ken Buck strongly opposes the separation of church and state , claiming the United States Constitution does not require such separation.

His attitude towards homosexuality is controversial. He was the first district attorney to achieve life imprisonment for a transgender murder case by convincing the jury that the hate crime was aggravated . As a result, Buck received enthusiastic approval from the LGBT associations, albeit in his capacity as elected district attorney. In his capacity as a Senate candidate, he claimed that homosexuality, like alcoholism , was a personal choice of the person concerned. The LGBT community was outraged and demanded that he withdraw this statement. Ken Bucks spokesman spoke in this context of a diversionary maneuver . He is also against the repeal of the don't-ask-don't-tell regulation in the military.
