Simon Guggenheim
John Simon Guggenheim (born December 30, 1867 in Philadelphia , † November 2, 1941 in New York City ) was an American businessman and politician .
Life
Simon Guggenheim was born in Philadelphia in 1867 as the son of Meyer Guggenheim and the younger brother of Daniel Guggenheim and Solomon R. Guggenheim . He lived temporarily in Denver and represented Colorado in the United States Senate for the Republican Party between 1907 and 1913 . During this time he was a member of the Committee to Establish a University of the United States . From 1919 to 1941, Simon Guggenheim was the President of the American Smelting and Refining Company .
Simon Guggenheim's wife was Olga Hirsh. Her son John Simon Guggenheim died shortly after he was born in 1922. Together with his wife, Simon Guggenheim subsequently founded the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation , which awards Guggenheim grants to American artists in memory of his son . They also donated money to various educational institutions.
